According to mythology, King Minos imprisoned Daedalus and Icarus, but they managed to escape and found shelter in ancient Agia Galini. Their cave still exists on the village’s main road, while it is believed that they used the rock, east of the port, to fly to freedom. In this particular spot are now located their statues as well as the wonderful open theater with a magnificent view of Agia Galini, the Gulf of Messara and the South Cretan sea.
During the tourist season, various events take place in the theater, such as concerts, theatrical plays, children’s events and book presentations, which attract a large number of people both from Agia Galini and the surrounding areas.
